Supply Chain Management Association Alberta (SCMA AB) in association with Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT), offers courses in leading to SAIT’s Applied Project Management Certificate.  

Risk management is a key competency for today’s business professional. In a complex and fast-paced business environment it is essential that managers and business professionals proactively manage risk inherent in day-to-day operations, customer agreements, business investments and special projects.

The learning material in this project risk management course will provide business professionals with best practice knowledge and tools to develop a sound risk management plan; perform a comprehensive risk assessment; develop a cost-effective risk response plan; provide for risk financing; and monitor risks to ensure risk responses are prompt and effective. You will experience application of the risk management principles through focused group activities completed during the workshops. The instructor will provide relevant context to the knowledge you gain through shares real life experiences and valuable lessons learned.

Module 1:       Introduction and Risk Identification

  • Understand the Risk Management Plan and how is it used on a project.
  • Describe the common methods used to develop a comprehensive list of project risks.

Module 2:       Qualitative Risk Analysis and Planning Responses

  • Evaluate and prioritize risk events using qualitative risk analysis tools.
  • Develop appropriate responses for project risks and establish contingences.

Module 3:       Quantitative Risk Analysis

  • Extend how risk events are characterized and perform some basic calculations.
  • Understand and appreciate the central limit theorem.
  • Understand and apply the concepts of quantitative risk analysis to project risks.

Module 4:       Controlling Project Risk

  • Understand the process 11.6 Control Risks and know its purpose

Instructor:  Dean Sheppard

Dean began his teaching career over 15 years ago while a graduate student in Project Management at the University of Calgary (U of C).  He has since taught Project Management, Entrepreneurship, Business Economics and Finance courses at U of C, Mount Royal University and SAIT Polytechnic.
