Workshop Duration and Organization

This is a two-day interactive workshop consisting of four in-class sessions. Each session is organized as follows:

  • What You Already Know - a brief statement linking information in the session to any previous
  • sessions (or to the candidate’s experience).
  • Overview - a brief description of the contents of the session.
  • Goals/Objectives - a description of what candidates are expected to learn from the session.
  • Recommended Reading - there are no mandatory readings in this workshop except for this
  • manual.
  • Discussion Questions - developed and facilitated by the instructor to permit candidates the
  • opportunity to hear how their peers conduct their competitive bidding practice.
  • Exercises or Assignments - instructions for preparing, and if required, submitting any
  • assignments due.
  • Session Notes - notes on the specific concepts or issues covered in the session.

Workshop Goals

Upon completion of this workshop candidates should be able to:

  • Understand competitive bidding activities and best practices
  • Read/write competitive bidding documents (RFQ and RFP)
  • Understand the foundations and implications of Canadian competitive bidding law
  • Understand the implications of Canadian inter-provincial and international trade agreements for
  • competitive bidding activities in the public sector
  • Understand the implications of the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the
  • International Sale of Goods (CISG) on contracting activities in Canada
  • Understand how contracts are formed, and how to form contracts in a manner that avoids
  • introducing uncertainty into their formation and later operation
  • Understand the component parts of processes for contract administration and management

Learning Activities

  • Candidates will achieve learning in this workshop through the following activities
  • Active listening in the interactive lectures
  • Participation in Instructor-facilitated discussions during the workshop
  • Identified readings
  • Completion of the final project

Payment and Cancellation Policy

You are eligible for a refund minus an administration fee of $100.00 plus tax for cancellation/withdrawal requests received in writing before week 2; thereafter, no refund will be available.  Transfer request to a future in-class offering is permissible only if received in writing and accompanied by supporting documentation prior to week 3.  Credits to be sued for future offerings are valid for 12 months from the date of initial payment and will expire if not used in that time frame.  Please contact Alberta Institute for details regarding eligibility to transfer.
