Course Overview    

Thinking critically is a mandatory skill in leading organizations.  But in many of today’s organizations we continuously run into situations where neither critical thinking is not happening.  Often, we hear that “we simply don’t have time to think”.

Organizations today employ a lot of intelligent, well-trained individuals and yet many decisions are made every day without the kind of critical assessment we would like to think is essential to good decisions.  Research suggests that this is because critical thinking is not an innate skill but one that must be developed over time. 

Key Learning Outcome(s):       


Participants in this workshop will take some time to really get to the heart of what critical thinking is.  We will explore the capacity for critical thinking through a series of exercises.  We will introduce and use tools to help us increase both our capacity to exercise critical thinking and to help others increase their skills. 

Participants will:

  • Learn how to distinguish automatic from manual thinking
  • Understand how to shift to Critical thinking
  • Learn and practice tools to develop critical thinking
  • Learn how to ask questions (of yourself or others) to generate critical thinking
  • Identify where you can apply critical thinking in your job and to strategy
  • Create a next steps plan

About the Instructor:

Janice Thomas is a world leading scholar and consultant on effective management and governance of complex organizational projects.  She earned her PhD in Organizational Analysis from the University of Alberta. She is Professor of Organizational Analysis and Project Management, and Department Chair for Organizational Analysis, in the Faculty of Business, at Athabasca University, Canada.  Janice has over 30 years of   management, consulting, planning, research, and academic experience in both the public and private sector.  She is in demand as a speaker and teacher in Canada, the United States, Europe, Asia, Australia, and South America, and has published 4 books and over 100 book chapters, journal publications and conference papers. 


Refund and Cancellation Policy: 


  • Registrants will receive a full refund to courses cancelled by Supply Chain Canada, Alberta Institute.
  • Registrants who have received written acceptance into a course and provide written notice to Supply Chain Canada, Alberta Institute of their withdrawal from the course 14 days or more prior to the first day of class, will be provided a full refund. After 14 days prior up to 2 days prior to the start of the class, Supply Chain Canada, Alberta Institute will refund half the course registration fee. After the 2- day period, refunds will not be granted.


Due to unforeseen circumstance if Supply Chain Canada - Alberta Institute cancels an event all registrants will be offered the option to transfer the registration to a future event or receive a refund.
